The Casa dos Loendros (Villa of the Olenders) at Alcaria Ruiva, some 2½
hrs. from Lisbon, and 1½ from Faro airport, and less than 40 km. after
Beja (EN122, and 14 km. before Mértola), at the intersection of the EN
123 the EM540. The village stands at the foot of the hill named after
it, which is an ideal jumping point for the Para-gliding adept. Walks,
bird watching (several near extinct species in Europe can be seen here).
Hunting or fishing (in season) are some of the activities possible
during the year, in this placid and lovely region.
Drive to the nearby "Pulodo Lobo" (Wolf’s leap) where the Guadiana River
cascades down over nearly 60 feet, through a narrow gorge, surrounded by
an extraordinary array of rock formations. Stroll around the old streets
of Mértola ("Vila Museu"), climb up to its castle, visit the
church (convert from an old mosque), and the various museums. shop
around the handicraft stores, taste the rich local gastronomy, hire a
canoe to help you to better know the Great River of the South...!, the
choice is yours.
Other possibilities are the abandoned Mina
the São Domingos, and its nearby old river harbour at the village of
Pomarão, or the city of Beja, to number just a few of the interesting
possibilities found in this region.
